MEMBERSHIP STATUS AND CATEGORIZATION
Under the new Charter members of the Institute are expected to possess adequate knowledge and experience as professional managers and to be enrolled in four categories of:

(a) Companions
(b) Fellows
(c) Members
(d) Associates

What is adequate knowledge and experience for the professional management at any point in time is to be determined by Council and the standard can be changed by the Council in its wisdom from time to time as you can see by the re-certification course which you are undergoing now in order to exchange your old certificate with new charter certificate.

Once Council enrolls a professional manager as a member in any of these membership categories then he is accorded status as such and also to bear appellations after his name recognizing the said membership status.

To qualify for enrolment the professional manager applicant must:
(a) Pass the qualifying examination prescribed by the Council and complete the practical training prescribed by the Institute or;

(b) Hold any other qualification accepted by the Institute for the time being or;

(c) Qualifies for enrolment as member in any of the 4 membership categories of the Institute.
In addition to the foregoing he must also satisfy the Council that:

  1. He is of good character
  2. He has attained the age as prescribed by the By-Laws of the Institute
  3. And that he has not been convicted in Nigeria or elsewhere of any offence involving fraud or dishonesty.

PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT PRACTITIONERS

The Act also provides for enrolment of Professional Managers as Professional Management Practitioners. Professional Management Practitioners are categories of Professional Managers who:

(a) For consideration of fees and remuneration engages themselves in the practice of management and;

(b) Render professional service or assistance in or about matters of principles or details relating to management or data or

(c) Render any other service, which may by the rules or By laws made by the Council designated as service constituting practice as Professional Management Practitioners.

(d) Satisfy any other requirement stipulated by Council for registration as Professional Management Practitioners.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP
The Act also provides for the Council of the Institute to award honorary membership of the Institute to persons it considers deserving of such honour upon terms and conditions to be prescribed by the Council and approved by the Institute at its General Meeting.

AFFILIATE MEMBERS
Affiliate members are companies or individuals with functional working relationship with the Institute.

CORPORATE MEMBERS
Are firms, limited companies, association, institutions and other corporate and or unincorporated bodies that have been admitted into membership of the Institute at the discretion of the Council into the four classes of membership classes A-D. It must be noted however that membership of the Institute by the corporate member does not confer its professional membership on any staff/director of the company or organization.

FULL MEMBERS
Full members are individuals that have been admitted into full membership of the Institute after staying in associate membership for a minimum of four years and are not less than 35 years of age with a minimum of eight years as head of department or its equivalent.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS
Associate members are individuals that have been admitted into associate membership of the Institute after staying in graduate membership for a minimum of five years and are not less than 30 years of age with a minimum of three years as a functional manger or specilaist.

GRADUATE/STUDENT MEMBERS
Are graduates and students registered for training who become conferred with professional managers membership after satisfying the requirement stipulated for such members by the Institute in its Bye-Laws

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP GRADES

1. FELLOW - F.N.I.M.
A candidate for consideration for Fellowship shall:

  • Be a person of eminent achievement in the practice of management as evidenced by his/her achievement of a prominent and/or by outstanding contributions to management knowledge.
  • Has been a full member of the Institute for a minimum period of five years.
  • Be up-to-date in the payment of his/her annual membership subscription and Management House Development Levy.
  • Be involved in the activities of the Institute at the National or Branch Level, including attendance at meetings, Annual National Management Conference or Annual General Meeting, service on Committees and Council, and service as Guest Lecturers or facilitators. Election to this grade is by Council of the Institute on the recommendation of the Board of Fellows. Members in this grade are entitled to use the initials F.N.I.M. after their names.

2. MEMBER - M. N. I.M.

An applicant must not be less than 30 years of age. In addition he/she must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  • A minimum of 4 years in Management position after election as an Associate Member.
  • He must have 15 years management or specialist experience from reputable appropriate qualification as stipulated in the Associate Membership grade.
  • Must be a Head of Department or its equivalent in the Public Sector, for a minimum period of 8 years and should have an appropriate educational background from reputable schools as stipulated in the Associate Membership grade Membership in this grade are entitled to use the initials M.N.I.M

3. ASSOCIATE - A.M.N.I.M.
An applicant must not be less than 30 years of age.In addition, he must satify one of the following:

  • Five (5) years post - election as a Graduate, provided he had continuously been employed as Functional Manager or Specilaist.
  • He must possess a University degree or apporopriate professional qualification obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning, plus a minimum of three (3) years as a Functional Manager or Specilaist.
  • He must possess NCE, NRN plus five (5) years experience as a Functional Manager or Specilaist
  • A WASC or equivalent obtained not later than 1970 with 10 years experience as a Functional Manager or Specilaist.
  • A qualification obtained from a recognised professional body, e.g. ACA, NIM Dip., AIPM e.t.c.

3. GRADUATE
An applicant must possess a university degree or a professional qualification obtained from a recognised institution of higher learning.

NOTE: All new members are required to attend the membership induction programme to be organised by the Institute
